Its market competitors included the Fiat Tipo and Toyota Corolla, but they had nothing that could compare to its feisty character (which some call \"lack of subtlety\" in terms of design), typical of Herbert Schäfer's designs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBy 1992, when production ended, over 6,300,000 units of the second-generation Golf had rolled off the assembly line. The model became well-known and liked, and is still a common sight on European roads today.
