It was created as a more dynamic version of the Škoda 100\/110 model, with which it shared a rear-engine platform. The two-door body and streamlined design gave it a distinctive look that stood out from other Eastern Bloc cars of the time. The 110 R model became the basis for creating high-performance versions – including the famous Škoda 130 RS, known as the \"Porsche of the East\". Thanks to this, Škoda gained recognition in international rallies and races.
