Pafawag 201E ET22 Byk

The Byk (Bull), also known as Helmut, was created in the 1960s in response to the electrification of Polish railway lines and the development of the mining and processing industries. The first two ET22 units left the Pafawag factory in Wrocław in 1969, marking the beginning of a fruitful twenty-year production run of this powerful electric locomotive.

Despite their massive size, the 120-ton ET22 units can reach speeds of up to 125 km/h. The ET22 locomotive was primarily designed for freight transport, but it was also assigned to passenger services. Over the twenty years of production, 1184 ET22 locomotives were built for PKP, as well as 23 units for the Moroccan carrier ONCF.
