Pafawag 201E ET22 Byk Locomotive

The Byk, also known by the nickname Helmut, was created in the 1960s as a response to the electrification of Polish lines and the development of the mining and processing industries. The first two ET22 units left the Pafawag factory in Wrocław in 1969, and so began the fruitful twenty-year production of this powerful electric locomotive.

Despite their enormous size, the 120-ton ET22 units are capable of reaching speeds of up to 125 km/h. The ET22 locomotive was primarily designed for freight transport, but it was also assigned to passenger transport. During twenty years of production, 1184 units of ET22 locomotives were built for PKP, and also 23 units for the Moroccan carrier ONCF.
