Volkswagen Transporter T2

The second-generation Volkswagen Transporter, known as the T2, was produced in Germany from 1967 to 1979. Production was then moved to Mexico and Brazil, where the curvaceous T2 earned the nickname "pão de forma" (loaf of bread) in Portuguese, and where it continued to be produced until 2013. In Poland, it was known affectionately as "Ogórek" (Cucumber), which – similar to its Portuguese name – accurately reflected the character of its elongated and rounded body.

Despite several competing vehicles, such as the Citroen H Van and Renault Estafette, only the T2 became such a widely recognized and beloved model. This was due to the fact that not only wealthy Western European families had the "Cucumber" at their disposal for holidays – the T2 also became an icon in the USA, where it transported American hippies across all the picturesque states. Thus, the second-generation Transporter was a symbol of cultural changes that allowed more people to experience a higher standard of living.
